On 20th of December Arianespace orbited two communications satellites for the European operator Eutelsat: Hot Bird 9 and W2M. Arianespace and Eutelsat have teamed up very successfully for over 25 years, Arianespace launched more than half of Eutelsat’s fleet. Arianespace is scheduled to launch another Eutelsat satellite, Hot Bird 10, on 12th of February 2009.

Hot Bird 9 and W2M are the 22nd and 23rd Eutelsat satellites launched by Arianespace. It was a 42nd Ariane 5 launch, 28th success in a row and 6th launch in 2008. The mission was carried out by an Ariane 5 ECA launcher from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Hot Bird 9 was built by Astrium as prime contractor and weighed 4,880 kg at launch.

Hot Bird 9 and W2M satellites are designed to transmit television channels to cable and satellite households in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Hot Bird 9 has 64 high-power Ku-band transponders, increasing the company’s operational redundancy at its flagship orbital position of 13E. W2M satellite was built by a consortium comprising Astrium and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and will offer TV broadcasting, data network feeds and broadband access. Weighing 3,463 kg at launch, W2M will operate up to 30 transponders. It offers a design life of 15 years.
